Spokane, Wash. - The Manhattan men's soccer team lost its third straight game to open the 2012 season, falling 6-0 to Oregon State as part of the Gonzaga Nike Classic on Sunday.
The Beavers (2-0-1) jumped out to an early lead in the third minute as Khiry Shelton banged home a rebound after goalkeeper George Ellis deflected a corner kick. They would add another goal in the 33rd minute as Shelton fed Mikhail Doholis just inside the 18-meter box. As Ellis committed to the thru ball, Doholis converted on an easy look at the net. Oregon State scored again just a mere five minutes later to take a 3-0 lead into the locker room.
In the second frame, the Jaspers (0-3-0) fell behind even further as Oregon State scored twice in the first 15 minutes out of the break to go up 5-0 in the 54th minute.
After the Beavers made it 6-0 on a goal from Jake Parker in the 69th minute, Christopher Lands took over in goal for Manhattan. Despite the score, Manhattan continued to look and avoid a shutout with Andrew Santos and C.J. Dragovich both getting off quality shot opportunities late.
It would prove fruitless however for the Jaspers as they only had three total shots, two on goal, while Oregon State fired 13 with nine being on net. Ellis made three saves before being pulled as Lands finished the match without having to make a save. Daniel Festa was given a yellow card due to a hard tackle in the 44th minute.
Manhattan continues its season long nine game road trip when they travel to take on local rival Columbia on Wed. Sept., 5.
