Jasper Rally Falls Short at Temple

Box Score

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - After falling behind 3-0 in the first half, the Manhattan Jaspers men's soccer team put together a strong rally on the road but ultimately fell 3-2 to the Temple Owls on Tuesday afternoon.

The Owls (1-1-1) jumped out quickly taking the early advantage on a Chas Wilson goal in the 22nd minute thanks to a solid pass sequence with Billy Kappock and Vaughn Spurrier. The Jaspers aggressive offensive attack kept Temple on their heels blasting a total of 23 shots in the game, but only six were on net.

Temple increased their lead in the 33rd minute as Wilson got his second goal of the game before Dalton Andrusko finished with a header off a corner kick from teammate Jared Martinelli in the 41st minute.

However, Manhattan (0-5-0) would get some momentum back almost immediately. Jake Scavetta sent a crossing pass into the box where both teams jostled for possession. It would be freshman Alex Shackley finding the loose ball and burying it for the first goal of his collegiate career. That tally would cut the deficit to two heading into halftime.

After the break, the Jaspers continued a strong attack forcing an eventual change in goalkeepers for Temple. George Ellis played well for Manhattan making five saves in the 80 minutes he played. He would be replaced by junior Christopher Lands in the 81st minute with his team trailing by two.

Forward Naru Park would get the Jaspers just a bit closer in the 83rd minute when Sean Towey floated a cross that Park headed off the post and in. However, the comeback would not be completed as Manhattan failed to find an equalizer in the final minutes.

Temple keepers combined for four saves as Dan Scheck and Bobby Rosato each allowed a goal while making two saves apiece.

Manhattan will enjoy a 10 day reprieve before traveling to Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. on Fri. Sept. 21 to take on St. Francis (NY).
