BUFFALO, N.Y. - While Hurricane Sandy led to schedule changes for a number of Manhattan College athletic teams this weekend, the Jasper volleyball squad was not one of them.  Needing a win to stay alive in the race for a berth in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Tournament, the Jaspers were in action at Canisius on Saturday afternoon.  However, Manhattan (13-15, 8-8 MAAC) was officially eliminated from the postseason hunt with a 25-20, 22-25, 25-13, 25-23 loss to the Griffs (15-10, 12-3 MAAC) at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Canisius scored four of the first five points of the match and opened up a 10-4 advantage before a Mariana Furquim (Curitiba, Brazil) kill capped a 5-1 Manhattan run that brought the Jaspers within two, 11-9.  Manhattan knotted the score at 14-14 on a kill by Alexa Lampasona (Remsenburg, N.Y.), but the Griffs responded with a 6-2 rally to go up 20-16.  After the Jaspers trimmed their deficit to one at 20-19, Canisius went on a 4-0 spurt to reach set point, and the Griffs closed out the frame by a 25-20 margin.  Canisius hit .478 (13 kills, two errors, 23 attempts) in the first set.

The Jaspers jumped out to a 5-2 cushion in the second set, but Canisius rallied for six of the next eight points to go in front, 8-7.  Furquim followed with a kill to even the score, then Kelsey Huntoon's (Monroe, Mich.) service ace gave the lead back to Manhattan.  The Jasper run reached 11-2, which allowed Manhattan to open up an 18-10 advantage.  However, the Griffs responded with a 9-4 spurt to pull within three at 22-19.  A Furquim kill gave the Jaspers their first set point opportunity at 24-20, and Furquim slammed another kill to finish off a 25-22 set win that evened the match at 1-1.

In the third set, Canisius opened up an early 11-3 lead and never looked back.  The Jaspers pulled within four at 13-9, but the Griffs countered with an 11-1 rally to increase their advantage to 24-10.  Manhattan fought off three set points before Canisius wrapped up a 25-13 set win.  The Griffs hit .455 (17-2-33), while the Jaspers hit just .051 (9-7-39) in the third set.

After the fourth set began with three early ties, Manhattan used a 7-2 rally to turn an 8-6 deficit into a 13-10 lead.  The Jaspers went up 16-14 on a kill by Juliana Behrens (Honolulu, Hawaii), but Canisius scored the next four points to regain the lead, 18-16.  Manhattan responded with a 4-0 run of its own, going ahead 20-18 before the Griffs claimed six of the next eight points to reach match point.  A Sydney Volovski (Oswego, Ill.) kill saved one match point, then Canisius got a kill from Jessica Warner to wrap up the set, 25-23, and the match, 3-1.  Manhattan hit .400 (18-4-35) as a team in the fourth set, while Canisius made just one attack error and hit a combined .314 (12 kills, 35 attempts) in the frame.

Furquim paced the Jaspers with 21 kills and added nine digs.  Lampasona tallied 13 kills on .320 hitting, while Volovski and Behrens contributed 10 kills apiece.  Jamie Collareta (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) had a double-double with 46 assists and 10 digs, and Huntoon recorded a team-high 19 digs, as the Jaspers outdug the Griffs 59-52.  As a team, Manhattan hit .242 (60-24-149) in the match.

Samantha Good hit .571 with a match-high 20 kills for Canisius.  She also tallied five blocks and three aces.  Logan Sulongga slammed 13 kills on .382 hitting, while Warner contributed nine kills, 10 digs and three aces.  Sydney Palka handed out 51 assists and Allyson Severyn tallied 24 digs for the Griffs.  Canisius outblocked Manhattan 9-2 and hit a solid .369 (55-7-130) as a team.

Manhattan looks to snap its five-match losing streak with a 2 p.m. matchup at Niagara (15-10, 12-3 MAAC) on Sunday.  The Jaspers posted a 3-1 victory over the Purple Eagles at Draddy Gymnasium on Sept. 29, their first win against Niagara since 2008.
