POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Manhattan College volleyball team won the first two sets of its Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) matchup at Marist on Sunday afternoon. However, the Red Foxes (10-15, 6-9 MAAC) stormed back to force a fifth set, then took the final frame to clinch an 18-25, 20-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-12 victory over the Jaspers (13-14, 8-7 MAAC) at McCann Arena.
Jamie Collareta (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) began the match with a service ace, and the Jaspers led 3-0 before Marist went on a 6-0 run to pull in front. Manhattan responded with a 5-2 spurt to regain the lead, 9-8. The Jaspers eventually extended their cushion to 17-11 on a kill by Mariana Furquim (Curitiba, Brazil). After Marist got back within four at 19-15, Manhattan claimed five of the next seven points to reach set point, and Juliana Behrens (Honolulu, Hawaii) put home a kill to finish off a 25-18 set win.
There were four ties early in the second set before the Jaspers took the lead for good, 9-8, on a Furquim ace. That ace was part of a 5-0 run, which was capped by a Sydney Volovski (Oswego, Ill.) kill that put Manhattan in front 11-8. The Red Foxes got back within two at 14-12 before Ellie Wiekamp (Laguna Niguel, Calif.) slammed a kill to start a 4-1 Jaspers rally that increased Manhattan's cushion to 18-13. Marist again chipped away, trimming its deficit to two at 18-16, but the Jaspers responded with four straight points to open up a 22-16 advantage. Manhattan held on to take the set by a 25-20 count, giving the Jaspers a 2-0 lead in the match.
Marist scored the first three points of the third set and never looked back. The Jaspers pulled within one after a Behrens and Volovski block made it 5-4, but the Red Foxes responded with a 9-2 rally to increase their lead to 14-6. After Marist moved within two points of the set at 23-14, the Jaspers got a kill from Lampasona and an ace by Collareta to cut the margin to seven. However, Marist hit .324 (17 kills, five errors, 37 attempts) in the third set and won the frame by a score of 25-17.
In the fourth set, the Red Foxes used a 4-0 spurt to turn a 2-2 tie into a 6-2 lead. Manhattan countered with a 5-1 rally of its own to force a 7-7 deadlock, but Marist won six of the next seven points to open up a 13-8 advantage. After the Jaspers scored the next three points to make it 13-11, the Red Foxes went on a 5-2 spurt to increase their lead to 18-13. Manhattan again pulled within two at 19-17 before Marist responded with a 4-0 clip that made the score 23-17, and the Red Foxes forced a decisive frame with a 25-20 set win.
The Red Foxes took the first point of the fifth set before kills by Furquim, Volovski and Wiekamp put Manhattan in front 3-1. However, with the Jaspers leading 4-2, Marist went on a 10-3 run to take a 12-7 advantage. The Red Foxes reached match point at 14-10, but Manhattan fought off two match point opportunities on kills by Furquim and Volovski. After a Marist timeout, the Red Foxes got a kill from Mackenzie Stephens to complete their comeback, 15-12. Marist committed just one attack error in the final set, hitting .333 (eight kills, 21 attempts) as a team.
Volovski had a match-high 19 kills and hit .405 to lead the Jaspers. Furquim finished with 14 kills, 17 digs and six blocks, while Behrens tallied 12 kills and four blocks. Collareta also registered a double-double, recording team-highs with 49 assists and 18 digs. Kelsey Huntoon (Monroe, Mich.) and Wiekamp contributed 14 digs apiece and Julie Bies (Massapequa, N.Y.) added 10 digs, as the Jaspers outdug the Red Foxes 82-61. As a team, Manhattan hit .219 (62-27-160) in the match.
Katie Estes led Marist with 17 kills, while Stephens tallied 15 kills on .300 hitting and seven blocks. Becca Jones contributed nine kills and 11 digs, and Hanna Stoiberg notched eight kills and five blocks off the bench. Audra Brady finished with 52 assists and 13 digs to go along with five blocks. Brooke Zywick had a match-high 23 digs for the Red Foxes. Marist hit .224 (62-23-174) as a team, including a combined .287 (40-9-108) over the final three sets, and outblocked Manhattan 11-8.
The Jaspers continue their six-match road trip with their annual Buffalo swing next weekend. Manhattan visits Canisius (14-10, 11-3 MAAC) at 2 p.m. on Saturday, then heads to Niagara (14-10, 11-3 MAAC) at 2 p.m. on Sunday. The Jaspers need to win both matches to remain in the hunt for a spot in the MAAC Tournament.
