RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Gaels' defender Laura Jackson broke a scoreless tie in the 55th minute as the Manhattan women's soccer team fell 1-0 at Iona (6-8-3, 4-3-1 MAAC) on Friday. Jackson found the back of the net with a blast from 30-yards out, slipping it past freshman goalkeeper Kristen Skonieczny who made two saves playing the second half.
Manhattan (5-11, 2-6 MAAC) battled through an even first half with its local MAAC rival. Jaspers' senior goalie Kara Davis came up with three saves in her 45 minutes patrolling the net. Manhattan fired three shots in the first half, coming from seniors Sara Jones, Allison Pfeiffer and one from junior Martine Diamond that was on goal forcing Gaels' goalkeeper Trista Rivera to come up with a save in the 22nd minute.
It was the Gaels' third shot attempt in the second half that went down as the golden goal with 54:06 on the clock. Jackson placed the shot in the left side of the net, marking her second goal of the year. It was assisted by midfielder Christina Tesoriero.
With less than five minutes remaining, the Jaspers managed to get off one last shot on goal in an attempt to tie the contest. Manhattan junior forward Janie Schlauder's scoring opportunity was stopped by Rivera who finished with two saves.
Iona held a 7-1 corner kick advantage in the match. The Gaels also outshot Manhattan 11-4.
The Jaspers play their final game of the season on Sunday when the squad travels to Fairfield. Kick off is set for 1 p.m.
