RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan women's soccer team suffered its third straight 1-0 setback Friday dropping a conference match at Niagara (7-7, 2-3 MAAC). In the 77th minute, Purple Eagles' freshman reserve Mari Siegrist-Gabas netted the game winning goal to upend Manhattan (4-8, 1-3 MAAC) in its seventh one goal loss of the year.
Manhattan goalkeeper Kara Davis was bombarded with 22 shots in the complete game effort. She came up with a season-high 10 saves, marking the ninth double-digit save performance of her career. Purple Eagles' senior goalkeeper Amanda Taylor received credit for her first win this season, making four saves for the shutout.
The Jaspers and Purple Eagles battled through a scoreless first half. Niagara outshot Manhattan 9-3 in the opening 45 minutes.
Niagara got a break with 76:03 on the clock when Siegrist-Gabas tracked down a loose ball on a rebound from senior Michaela DiFazio who had her shot blocked. Siegrist-Gabas capitalized on the opportunity by quickly firing a shot past Davis for her second career goal.
The Purple Eagles had five of their game-high seven corner kicks in the second half. Niagara placed 11 of its 22 shots on goal. Jaspers' junior midfielder Martine Diamond had two of Manhattan's four shots on goal coming off the bench.
Manhattan's next stop is Canisius on Sunday to finish the Western New York conference swing. Kick off with the Golden Griffs is set for 1 p.m.
