POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. - The Manhattan College women's basketball team hung with six-time defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) champion Marist for a while on Monday night. However, the Red Foxes (9-6, 4-0 MAAC) pulled away early in the second half to notch a 61-41 victory over the Jaspers (8-8, 2-2 MAAC) at McCann Arena.
With Marist holding an early 8-6 lead, the Red Foxes rallied for nine straight points to extend their cushion to 17-6. However, a three-pointer by Lindsey Loutsenhizer (North Huntingdon, Pa.) sparked a 13-5 run that brought the Jaspers within three, 22-19, on Monica Roeder's (Marlton, N.J.) trey at the 5:36 mark. Manhattan wouldn't score for the rest of the half, though, as Marist ended the half on an 8-0 run to take a 30-19 lead into the locker room.
A Loutsenhizer jumper to open the second half cut Manhattan's deficit to nine, 30-21, but the Red Foxes went on an 11-0 rally over the next four minutes to extend their cushion to 20 points, 41-21, with 15:24 remaining. The lead reached a game-high 25 points when a three-point play by Leanne Ockenden put Marist in front 53-28 at the 7:39 mark. Manhattan scored the next six points to bring the margin back under 20 at 53-34, but it would get no closer, and Marist picked up its 28th consecutive MAAC win with a 61-41 triumph.
Loutsenhizer was the only Jasper in double figures with 14 points. Schyanne Halfkenny (Hyde Park, Mass.) contributed six points and a team-high six rebounds to go along with three assists, while Roeder and Alyssa Herrington (Cambridge, N.Y.) each tallied five points. Allison Skrec (Roselle, N.J.) handed out three assists and collected a career-high four boards. Overall, the Jaspers shot 40.5 percent (17-of-42) from the field, but Manhattan was held to 29.4 percent (5-of-17) three-point shooting and 25 percent (2-of-8) shooting at the free throw line.
Brandy Gang led Marist with 14 points. Casey Dulin had 13 points to go along with a game-high eight rebounds, six assists and four steals, while Corielle Yarde tallied 13 points and seven boards for the Red Foxes. Ockenden added nine points, and Kelsey Beynnon finished with seven points and six rebounds. Marist shot 43.1 percent (22-of-51) from the floor and held a 33-26 rebounding edge, including a 16-11 advantage on the offensive glass. The Red Foxes shot 33.3 percent (9-of-27) from three-point range and 72.7 percent (8-of-11) at the charity stripe.
After playing four games in eight days to open conference play, the Jaspers now have three days off before welcoming Canisius (8-7, 2-2 MAAC) to Draddy Gymnasium on Friday. It will be Manhattan's annual "Kid's Day Out" game, with a special early start time of 11 a.m.
