RIVERDALE, N.Y.- Senior attacker Julia Lavelle and junior Chrissy Gutenberger each netted two goals and an assist but the Manhattan women's lacrosse team fell to UMBC 20-6 Sunday afternoon in Baltimore, Md.
A tough day for the Lady Jaspers (2-3), the Retrievers (5-2) led from the opening draw and used a six-goal effort from midfielder Amanda Pappas to cruise to their second-straight victory over Manhattan.
Getting on the scoreboard less than one minute into the game, UMBC took a 1-0 lead on a goal by Erika Braerman at the 29:07 mark of the first half. The Lady Jaspers would answer when Lavelle scored on a free position shot to tie it at 1-all with 24:47 remaining.
It would be the closest Manhattan came to avenging last season's defeat as the Retrievers tallied seven unanswered goals, including three in a row from attacker Emily Coady, to hold a commanding 13-3 lead at the break.
In the second half, the Jaspers would get goals from freshman midfielder Carly Eskenazi, Lavelle and Gutenberger but it would not be enough as UMBC picked up seven more scores to record the 20-6 victory,
Between the pipes, Natalie Rau made one save in the Retrievers' win. For Manhattan, sophomore Julia DiBernardo recorded two saves in the defeat while senior Jayne Timo finished with four saves in late-game duty,
Overall, the Retrievers paced both squads in shots (35-14), ground balls (14-11) and draw controls (17-10).
Manhattan looks to rebound Saturday, when they welcome Louisville to Riverdale for a 1 p.m. matchup at Gaelic Park.
