RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan women's soccer team came up short in its conference match with Marist on Sunday falling 4-1 in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Jaspers' senior forward Devon Lutz logged Manhattan's (2-9-1, 0-4 MAAC) lone goal, which marked her third goal of the season. Freshman midfielder Amanda Epstein recorded what proved to be Marist's (9-4, 4-0 MAAC) game winning goal in the 16th minute.
Marist needed only 63 seconds to post their first goal on the scoreboard. Red Foxes' junior Jackie Frey capitalized on a deflected pass from Rycke Guiney and fired one home from six yards out. Epstein sent Marist ahead 2-0 with 15:51 on the clock off a feed from junior defender Chelsea Botta.
Manhattan fought back with Lutz's goal in the 34th minute when she blasted a shot into the back of the net from 15 yards out. It was the fourth goal of her career and was assisted by Jaspers' junior Jordan Luithle.
The Red Foxes expanded their 2-1 halftime advantage less than three minutes into the second period when Guiney converted a penalty kick after a hand ball by the Jaspers in the box. Marist put the contest out of reach in the 74th minute when junior Jaclynn Sabia got in the scoring column. Sabia pinpointed her shot into the upper right corner of the net from 25 yards out.
Manhattan goalkeeper Kara Davis was on record for the loss, despite stopping 10 shots. It was the fourth time this season that Davis posted a double-digit save effort. Red Foxes' freshman goalie Andrea Wicks received credit for the win with two saves over 90 minutes of action.
The Jaspers look to erase their five game skid next weekend when Manhattan returns to Gaelic Park for its final two home games. Manhattan will host Fairfield on Friday and Iona on Sunday. Both matches are slated for 7 p.m.
