Jaspers Fall in Heartbreaker on Senior Night

Box Score

RIVERDALE, N.Y. -
The Manhattan women's soccer team left it all on the field Sunday night, but the Jaspers came up short falling 2-1 in double overtime to Iona (4-9-2, 3-2 MAAC) at Gaelic Park. Gaels' sophomore forward Carly Haden tallied the game winner in the 105th minute to spoil Senior Night for the Jaspers. Prior to the contest, Manhattan honored its three member senior class consisting of Devon Lutz, Megan Lavecchia and Marissa Greco in their final home match of their collegiate careers.

Manhattan (2-10-2, 0-5-1 MAAC) overcame an early one goal deficit as the squads entered intermission locked at 1-1. Gaels' freshman forward Melissa Frederick notched the first goal of the contest in the 15th minute when she handled a feed off a free kick from junior back Laura Jackson and headed it into the back of the net.

Jaspers' sophomore forward Janie Schlauder retaliated for Manhattan in the 26th minute when she slid the equalizer past Iona goalkeeper Trista Rivera. Schlauder took a pass from junior Allison Pfeiffer in front of the goal and pushed it into the back right corner.

Manhattan and Iona battled through an even second half. The Jaspers put pressure on the Gaels in the final 13 minutes of regulation, but could not come up with the game winning strike. Lutz slightly missed a pair of headers in front of the goal with the most notable opportunity coming in the 78th minute when she sent it just high of the crossbar.

Jaspers' sophomore Lexi Kearns got one last shot attempt on goal with only 25 seconds remaining in regulation. Kearns made a good run down the sideline and had an open look on net that was stopped by Rivera for her fourth save of the match.

After a scoreless first overtime, Iona capitalized just over four minutes into the second period. Gaels' sophomore back Katie Higgins got the ball to Haden who turned and fired from 20-yards out bending the shot into the upper right corner for the sudden victory.

Manhattan goalkeeper Kara Davis made three saves in the contest, including a highlight reel diving stop in the first half. Iona outshot Manhattan 17-11 and held a 5-1 corner kick advantage.

Manhattan embarks on its four game road series to finish out the season beginning on Saturday when the Jaspers visit Saint Peter's. Kick off is set for 1 p.m. in Jersey City, N.J.
