RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Martine Diamond (Island Park, N.Y.) scored 84 seconds into the Manhattan College women's soccer team's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) opener on Friday afternoon. However, MAAC Preseason Player of the Year Kelly Reinwald countered with a pair of tallies to lead Canisius (6-4-1, 1-0-0 MAAC) to a 2-1 victory over the Jaspers (2-6-1, 0-1-0 MAAC) at Gaelic Park.
Diamond's team-leading fourth goal of the year came off a direct kick from just inside the box that went over the head of Canisius goalkeeper Caroline Robert and into the back of the net. The Jaspers maintained their 1-0 advantage until the 28th minute, when the Griffs' Kelly Sloane sent a pass into the box. Manhattan goalkeeper Kara Davis (Redding, Conn.) came out to play the loose ball, but Reinwald beat her to it and chipped it into the empty net to tie the score at 1-1.
Despite numerous good offensive chances by each side, the teams went into halftime knotted at 1-1. Manhattan had 12 shots and four corner kicks in the opening 45 minutes, while Davis saved five of the Griffs' 10 first-half shots.
Canisius took the lead in the 59th minute when Reinwald converted a penalty kick after a Manhattan hand ball in the box. She appeared to add another goal off a late corner kick, but a foul was called on the Griffs, keeping it a 2-1 game. The Jaspers had several chances in the second half, but were unable to convert an equalizer.
Manhattan finished the game with 17 shots, led by three apiece from Diamond and Kayla Howden (Monroe, Conn.). Howden had two of the Jaspers' five shots on goal. Davis (2-6-1) made eight saves.
Reinwald attempted six shots, five of which were on target, and Brianna Smith had five shots. Overall, Canisius outshot the Jaspers 19-17 and held an 8-5 advantage in corner kicks. Robert (5-3-1) stopped four Manhattan shots.
The Jaspers return to action on Sunday morning, when they host Niagara (3-7-0, 1-0-0 MAAC) at 10 a.m. Manhattan ended the 2010 season with a 1-0 victory at Niagara.
