RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan women's soccer team didn't have enough left in the tank after Friday's victory over Bryant as the Lady Jaspers dropped a 2-0 decision to Cornell (4-4-0) on Sunday morning at Gaelic Park. Big Red junior forward Brook Chang scored in the 38th minute and again in the 85th minute to give Manhattan (2-6-1) its first home loss of the year.
Manhattan goalkeeper Kara Davis collected five saves in a complete game effort. On the opposite end of the field, Cornell junior goalie Kelly Murphy made two saves to record her first shutout this season.
The Big Red ended the defensive stalemate seven minutes prior to intermission by capitalizing on a corner kick opportunity. Sophomore midfielder Xandra Hompe sent the kick into the box for Chang who finished in the right side of the net.
Cornell added an insurance goal with less than six minutes remaining in regulation when freshman midfielder Rachel Nichols penetrated into the box and found Chang with an excellent pass into open space. Chang converted in the open net for her third goal this season.
Manhattan was outshot 14-8 in the match. The Lady Jaspers could not capitalize on a 5-1 corner kick advantage, including a 4-0 edge in the second half.
Manhattan looks to regroup as their four game home stretch continues on Friday when the Lady Jaspers host Siena at 7 p.m. The match opens Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play for the Lady Jaspers.
