RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan women's soccer team wrapped up the 2010 regular season with a 1-0 victory at Niagara (10-6-1, 5-4-0 MAAC) on Sunday afternoon. Lady Jaspers' junior forward Megan Lavecchia provided the game winning goal in the 27th minute as Manhattan (5-13-1, 3-6-0 MAAC) picked up its third conference victory of the year.
Manhattan sophomore goalkeeper Kara Davis recorded nine saves in the match to post her third shutout of the season and eighth of her career. The Lady Jaspers stellar back line effort was anchored by starters Kara Bucci, Devon Lutz and Sara Jones. Bucci and Lutz were mainstays on defense all season long without missing a start in 19 contests.
With 26:43 on the clock, Lavecchia took advantage of a golden opportunity when she collected a loose ball in the box and finished for her second goal of the season and sixth of her career. The tally also snapped the Lady Jaspers' four game drought without a goal.
The Manhattan defense weathered the Purple Eagles aggressive attacking to preserve the one goal lead the rest of the way. Niagara outshot Manhattan 22-11 and held a 9-1 corner kick advantage.
Purple Eagles' goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers finished with three saves in Niagara's first home loss of the year. Manhattan not only spoiled Senior Day for the Purple Eagles, but the loss also eliminated Niagara from the 2010 MAAC Championships four team field.
The Lady Jaspers will say goodbye to seniors Alyssa Bachowski, Kara Bucci, Michelle Miyaki, Caroline Morse and Kristin Spiros. Morse led Manhattan in scoring for the third time in her four year career finishing with 12 points in 2010. The Lebanon, N.J. native will graduate tied for fourth in goals (21), tied for third in assists (15) and fourth in points (57) on the program's all-time list.
