RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Freshman Jaclynn Sabia scored the game's only goal in the 19th minute to help Marist (4-3-1, 1-0) to a 1-0 victory over Manhattan (4-5, 0-1) in MAAC women's soccer action on Friday in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Lady Jaspers' freshman goalkeeper Kara Davis recorded a career-high six saves to Marist's four saves from goalie Jamie Balzarini who recorded the shutout.
"It was an entertaining and hard fought game between two good teams," explained Lady Jaspers' Head Coach Sean Driscoll. " Marist had a chance in the first half and capitalized on it. The bottom line is it comes down to taking advantage of opportunities, they took care of them and we did not."
The Red Foxes' early strike came just 18:01 into the game when Sabia settled a loose ball 17 yards from the goal, and placed her shot from the left flank just inside the far post. It marked the second goal of the season from the forward from Wayne, N.Y.
Manhattan's offense awoke in the second half and outshot Marist by a 7-3 margin. Four of the Lady Jaspers' game-high five corner kicks came consecutively over a 1:11 span in the second half, but Manhattan missed its several chances to post the equalizer.
The Lady Jaspers head to Loudonville, N.Y. on Sunday to face off with upstate rival Siena. Game time is set for 1 p.m. Last season, Manhattan battled the Saints to a scoreless tie at Gaelic Park on Senior Day.
