RIVERDALE, N.Y. - Junior forward Caroline Morse scored her second game winning goal of the season, while freshman goalkeeper Kara Davis recorded the first shutout of her collegiate career as the Manhattan women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 victory at Cornell (0-3-1) on Sunday. The win capped a three game road series in which the Lady Jaspers went 2-1 to improve to an even 3-3 on the year.
"I thought the team rebounded well from a disappointing performance on Friday," explained Manhattan head coach Sean Driscoll. "This was our best defensive effort of the season. It was a nice road win for us."
It was in the 22nd minute when Morse teamed up with senior midfielder Courtney McMahon for the decisive goal, and her team leading fifth of the season. After a quick restart, McMahon found Morse who escaped behind the Cornell defense, and then lofted an arching shot over Big Red goalkeeper Kelly Murphy.
McMahon's assist represented the 22nd of her career, a Manhattan College record. McMahon, a 2009 Lowe's NCAA Division I Senior CLASS Award candidate, has registered four points, including two assists this season.
Despite being outshot by a 14-6 margin in the match, the Manhattan defense was able to weather the offensive storm to preserve the one goal advantage. Lady Jasper starting backs Kara Bucci, Jill Beauchamp and Amanda Fischer helped anchor the effort.
Davis tied a career-high with four saves in the contest, and made two key stops in the second half.
The Lady Jaspers host their next two opponents at Gaelic Park beginning on Friday with a match against cross-Bronx rival Fordham at 7 p.m. Manhattan completes the weekend homestand on Sunday with a 10 a.m. contest versus Wagner.
