RIVERDALE, N.Y. - After a thrilling 4-3 victory at Fairleigh Dickinson on Sunday to begin a three game road stand, the Manhattan women's soccer team dropped a 4-0 decision at Columbia (1-2) on a rainy Friday night. Lions' senior Sophie Reiser scored three goals to support teammate Kelly Hostetler's game winner 3:35 into the match.
Manhattan (2-3) was outshot 7-1 in the first half, which resulted in a pair of Columbia goals. Hostetler capitalized on a free-kick in the fourth minute to put the Lions in front early. The junior forward from Washington state sent an arching shot from 30 yards out past Lady Jaspers' starting goalkeeper Kara Davis. Then less than two minutes before the half, Reiser doubled Columbia's lead when she finished a feed from Lauren Cooke inside the post.
Just out of intermission Reiser converted her second goal of the contest when she chipped a shot over the Manhattan defense and into the back of the net. Reiser, the reigning Ivy League Player of the Year, wrapped up the second hat trick performance of her career in the 65th minute when she finished on the doorstep of the goal with her left foot.
Manhattan keepers Davis and Caitlin Trupiano split halves in goal as each allowed two goals apiece. Davis made three saves, while the Lady Jaspers were outshot 12-2.
Manhattan looks to rebound on Sunday afternoon when the Lady Jaspers travel to Cornell for a 1 p.m. match. Cornell (0-2-1) enters the contest coming off back-to-back losses at Niagara and Lehigh. It will be the inaugural meeting between the two programs.
