Gutenberer?s Four Goals and Morrison?s Midfield Control Power Manhattan to 14-12 Win Over Iona

Riverdale, N.Y. -- Freshman Chrissy Gutenberger scored four goals and won several key draw controls and junior Keri Morrison controlled the midfield to power the Manhattan College women's lacrosse team to a 14-12 win over local MAAC rival Iona College in a match played Wednesday evening in the rain at Gaelic Park. With the win, the Lady Jaspers raised their record to 7-3 overall and 2-1 in conference.
Manhattan's Caralyn Hickey scored the first goal of the match about 1:15 into the match, only to see that lead disappear when Iona scored the next two goals at 25:19 and 23:31. But then Manhattan scored the next three goals of the match ? two by Gutenberger ? to open up a 4-2 lead. After Iona's Christie Godlewski scored two goals to bring the Gaels to within one goal at 4-3, Manhattan again went on a three goal run in the last five minutes of the half to go into the locker room with a 7-4 lead. The last goal of the half ?by Helen Kerrisk -- came with just 10 seconds to go.
Iona opened the scoring in the second half at 27:37 and then the two teams traded goals with the game standing at 10-7 Manhattan with 19:25. But Iona brought the game back to a 10-10 tie at the 13:18 mark on another goal by Godlewski, who had six tallies on the evening. But again, the Lady J's had a 3-0 run on goals by Phelicia VanOverbeke, Carlalyn Hickey and VanOverbeke again to take a 13-10 lead with 8:14 to go in the match. Iona then scored two goals to bring the game to within a goal at 4:39, but then Julia Lavelle scored a game clinching goal at 2:41 to make the final score 14-12.
In addition to Gutenberger's 4 goals, the Lady Jaspers got 3 from Hickey, 2 from Lavelle, 2 from VanOverbeke and 1 each from Kerrisk, Korrin Nash and Morrison. Morrison was a star for Manhattan in the midfield and on defense, causing a whopping 9 turnovers and collecting 5 ground balls. She also had five draw controls.
“Chrissy was a force on offense and Keri was just terrific in the midfield,” said Manhattan head coach Jim Drivas.
Manhattan had the clear advantage in shots with a 44-23 difference. Iona's goalkeeper Colleen Magri had 18 saves in goal, while Manhattan goalkeeper Heidi Sheffer had 5 saves.
The Wednesday evening game culminated a 10-game home stand for Manhattan. The team now heads off to Buffalo area for two matches ? Friday at 7 p.m. at Niagara University and Sunday at 10 a.m. at Canisius College
