RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? The Manhattan College baseball team rolled over Brigham Young University (1-2), 20-6, in the first game of its doubleheader on Saturday at Reynolds Stadium in Stillwater, Okla. The Jaspers dropped their second contest falling 11-7 to host school #13 Oklahoma State (2-0).
In game one, Manhattan (1-2) used a 10 run sixth inning rally to break a 3-3 tie and cruise on to a 14 run triumph over BYU. Junior designated hitter Anthony Armenio erupted for five RBI and went 3-for-4 from the plate. Austin Sheffield blasted his first home run of the season and knocked in four RBI, while classmate Mark Onorati contributed four hits and three RBI.
Manhattan sophomore Mike McCann scored the first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the first on a BYU fielding error. The Cougars were hindered by six errors in the contest. Onorati scored from third base later in the inning courtesy of Armenio's sacrifice fly to give Manhattan an early 2-0 edge.
After matching runs in the third inning with the Jaspers score coming from Armenio's RBI double, the Cougars' battled to eventually tie the game at 3-3 by the sixth when junior outfielder Sean McNaughton notched an RBI triple.
Manhattan broke the game open in the bottom half of the sixth when the Jaspers capitalized on five hits and two errors. The Jaspers hit through the line up and Sheffield capped the offensive surge with a three run homer over the right center field wall, which gave Manhattan a commanding 13-3 advantage.
The Jaspers tacked on five more runs in the seventh and two in the eighth to secure the victory. McCann was 2-for-4 and scored two runs. Senior Ruben Perez and Ramon Ortega also tallied two hits.
Junior right-hander Zac Goyer twirled six dominant innings, struck out 11 and allowed just three runs in his first start of the season. Matt Jordan made his collegiate debut in relief and closed out the final three innings.
In game two, Manhattan jumped out of the gate quickly scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, but the Cowboys rallied for nine runs in over the first three innings and cruised to the finish. Sophomore Chad Salem hit 2-for-4 and scored three runs. Onorati and Armenio also posted multi-hit games.
The Jaspers pulled within 9-5 in the eighth inning when Armenio singled through the right side which allowed Onorati to score. Then Sheffield followed with a RBI single of his own which sent Salem across the plate.
Oklahoma State responded in the bottom half of the inning with a pair of runs, and then freshman reliever Randy McCurry got the final three outs to close out the game.
Cowboys' middle reliever Jared Starks earned the win. Jaspers' sophomore Dan Forman was credit the loss. He pitched two and two thirds innings, allowed seven earned runs and struck out four.
Manhattan wraps up the weekend tomorrow with a single game against Oklahoma State.
