RIVERDALE, N.Y. - The Manhattan women's soccer team battled league rival Niagara (6-5-1, 2-1 MAAC) into sudden victory overtime, but it was the Purple Eagles who received the game winning from junior forward Courtney Davies in the 98th minute to take a 1-0 victory on Friday at Gaelic Park. With the loss, Manhattan falls to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in the MAAC.
"We did not have much to offer in the first half," explained Manhattan's fifth year head coach Sean Driscoll. "In the second half we looked better and more dangerous, but just could not finish on our scoring opportunities."
Despite a fast paced, up-tempo match, the contest remained scoreless through the entire 90 minutes of regulation. Niagara dropped 15 shots on the Lady Jaspers, including 10 in the second half, but Manhattan freshman goalkeeper Kara Davis came up with one save after another. Davis finished with a career-high eight saves, and made six stops in the second half.
The Lady Jaspers held a 8-5 advantage in corner kicks, and took three straight over a five minute span in the second period, but could not turn their opportunities into a goal. Purple Eagles' junior goalkeeper Ashleigh Bowers notched four saves in the contest en route to her third shutout of the year.
In overtime, Davies broke the scoreless tie with her second goal of the year when she sent a header into the back of the net courtesy of an assist from junior midfielder Chelsea Spencer off a set piece.
Manhattan looks to rebound and snap its three game losing skid on Sunday when the Lady Jaspers host Canisius at Gaelic Park. Kick off is slated for 10 a.m.
