BRONX, N.Y. ? The day after its worst performance of the season in a 3-0 loss to Stony Brook on Friday, the Manhattan College volleyball team rebounded with its two best showings this year on Saturday.  However, the Lady Jaspers (0-6) came up just short each time, falling 23-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-23 to Fordham (7-4) and 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 22-25, 15-6 to Princeton (3-0) on the second day of the Rose Hill Classic at Fordham's Rose Hill Gym.  Sherryta Stokes (Beltsville, Md.) was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 3.08 kills and 3.17 digs per set in the tournament.

The match with Fordham was tight from the get-go, as there were 13 ties and three lead changes in the first set.  With the Rams leading 21-18, Manhattan went on a 3-0 run to tie the score before three successive service errors gave Fordham a 23-22 lead.  A kill by Andrea Reiff (Hawthorne, N.Y.) tied it at 23-23, then a block by Alyssa Getzel (Richmond, Va.) and Rita Welsh (Collegeville, Pa.) set up Manhattan's first set point.  After a Fordham timeout, Welsh's kill put away the set, 25-23.

Manhattan took an early 4-2 lead in the second set before Fordham charged back to take a 5-4 advantage.  The Rams used a 4-0 run to increase their lead to 11-7 and were able to maintain that edge for the remainder of the set.  Manhattan pulled within one at 21-20, but Fordham responded with a 3-0 rally to earn its first set point.  The Lady Jaspers fought off Fordham's first two set points before Jolanda Gunning-Snowden's kill gave the Rams a 25-22 win that tied the match at 1-1.

The teams traded the first 19 points of the third set until Manhattan grabbed the first two-point lead of the frame at 11-9.  The Lady Jaspers won the next point to make it 12-9 before Fordham came back to force a 15-15 tie.  The score was tied four more times until Fordham went on a 4-0 run to turn a 20-20 deadlock into a 24-20 edge.  Manhattan tallied the next two points before the Rams put away the set, 25-22, to take a 2-1 advantage in the match.

In the fourth set, Fordham used an 8-2 run to turn a 4-4 tie into a 12-6 lead.  The Rams increased their lead to 18-11 before Manhattan went on a 10-3 run to force the 39th and final tie of the match at 21-21.  Fordham tallied the next two points and held on to take the set, 25-23, and seal the victory, 3-1.

In the third set, Manhattan went on separate runs of 3-0 and 4-0 while Diane Strutner (San Jose, Calif.) was serving to take a 19-13 lead.  After a Strutner service error, Sheena Donohue served three consecutive aces to get the Tigers within two at 19-17, but two straight Princeton errors followed and brought Manhattan's lead back to four at 21-17.  The Lady Jaspers hit .444 (14-2-27) in the set and closed out the 25-22 win on a kill by Reiff.

Getzel's ace that dribbled off the top of the net gave the Lady Jaspers a 12-8 lead in the fourth set, but Princeton rallied back and forced Manhattan to take a timeout while leading 15-13.  The Tigers won the first point out of the timeout to pull within one, but Manhattan responded with a 7-2 run to bring the lead back to six at 22-16.  Manhattan was in control for the rest of the set and forced a deciding frame with a 25-22 win that was capped by a Stokes kill.  Princeton hit -.026 (10-11-38) in the fourth set.

It was all Princeton in the deciding fifth set.  After a block by Stokes and Jen Haggerty (Springfield, Pa.) put Manhattan in front 3-2, the Tigers went on a 12-2 run to earn a slew of match points at 14-5.  The Lady Jaspers fought off the first match point, but the margin was too much to overcome and the Tigers won the fifth set 15-6.  Princeton had 12 kills in the fifth set, compared to just one for Manhattan.
