RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? Manhattan starting pitchers Tom Costigan and Brian Pendergast combined for 16 innings of shutout baseball leading the Jaspers to a doubleheader sweep of Iona (1-31, 1-13), 6-0 and 4-0, this afternoon in Riverdale. The tandem each notched seven strikeouts helping Manhattan improve to 17-15-1 overall and 8-3 in the MAAC.
In game one, Manhattan posted its first run of the ballgame in the bottom of the fourth when Kevin Nieto crossed home plate on Dom Lombardi's RBI single to left field. Lombardi scored soon after on a wild pitch to put the Jaspers on top 2-0.
Lombardi led Manhattan's offensive attack batting 3-for-4, scoring three runs and connecting on two RBIs over the doubleheader.
In the sixth inning, Mark Onorati sent a lead off home run over the right field fence to add a third run to the Jaspers' advantage. It was Onorati's third long ball of the season.
Senior outfielder Eric Nieto drove in another run in the bottom of the seventh on a hard hit ball down the left field line, and Manhattan posted two more in the eighth to secure a 6-0 victory.
Costigan went all nine innings, allowed five hits and walked just one. With the victory, Costigan improves to 4-2 on the year.
In game two, the Jaspers generated eight hits resulting in four runs to complete the doubleheader sweep. Lombardi was a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate, and broke a scoreless game in the bottom of the second scoring on heads up base running.
With two out in the bottom of the fourth, junior second baseman Ruben Perez (Miami, Fla./Felix Varela) expanded the Manhattan lead to 2-0 with a RBI double down the left field line. Then in the sixth, the Jaspers registered two insurance runs on a Ryan Masters RBI single to wrap up the ballgame.
Pendergast was dominant through seven innings of work. He allowed just six hits and notched his third win of the season.
Manhattan returns to action tomorrow for the final game of its local MAAC rivalry with Iona. Game time is slated for noon at Van Cortlandt Park.
