Riverdale, N.Y. (April 17, 2008) ? The Manhattan College Softball Team split in their doubleheader with Fairleigh Dickinson University today. The Lady Jaspers fell 2-0 in the first game, but a 2-3 performance by Danielle Just led the Lady Jaspers to a 3-0 victory.
In the first game, Freshman Erika Sullivan struck out the first five batters she saw as she pitched two perfect innings. But in the top of the fourth, Sullivan gave up a two RBI triple and the Knights took a 2-0 lead. Both defenses were playing tight, not giving up any extra bases.
The Lady Jaspers had trouble getting their offense going as they could not come back. Nicole Michel, Kristina Walraven and Melissa Donnelly all went 1-3 in the game for Manhattan. Sullivan pitched 5.0 innings, striking out seven batter and walking only one.
In the second game, the Lady J's were determined to get some runs on the board. They did just that, as Lyndize Phillips beat out a bunt that drove in one run, and a throwing error caused Walraven to come home. After the first inning, Manhattan held onto a 2-0 lead until the fourth where they struck again.
In the fourth, Just led the inning off with a double down the right field line. Jaci Rahey followed up with a double to deep left center field, driving in Just. The 3-0 lead proved to be too much for the Knights as Manhattan cruised on to a 3-0 victory.
Donnelly pitched four scoreless innings, giving up only three hits and striking out three. Ashley Rampino got the save, pitching 3.0 innings, giving up only one hit and no runs.
The Lady Jaspers will return to action on Saturday, April 19 where they will take on Iona College. The doubleheader is set to start at 12:00 p.m. at Gaelic Park.
