Lady Jaspers Notch Second Straight Win, 70-60 Over Stony Brook

Box Score

STONY BROOK, N.Y. ? The Manhattan College women's basketball team took the floor for the first time in eight days on Monday night, and if the Lady Jaspers were affected by the layoff, they clearly didn't show it.  Michelle Pacheco (Bronx, N.Y.) tallied a career-high 22 points and Kelly Regan (Williamsville, N.Y.) recorded her second career double-double with 11 points and a career-high-tying 10 rebounds, as the Lady Jaspers (4-6) notched their second consecutive victory, a 70-60 triumph over Stony Brook (1-9) at Pritchard Gymnasium.

“It was nice to get a win on the road, especially after taking a week off for exams,” Head Coach Myndi Hill said.  “I was most pleased with the fact that we hit the boards and we were able to get to the free throw line, which are two things we've been working on.”

Stony Brook opened up a 12-7 lead at the 11:37 mark of the first half before back-to-back three-pointers by Nicole Harrison (Falls Church, Va.) and Regan gave the Lady Jaspers a 13-12 lead.  The Seawolves regained the lead on a basket by Ariel Brown, but a fast-break layup by Abby Wentworth (Portland, Maine) followed by an Annie McIntyre (Portland, Ore.) trey put Manhattan up 18-14 with 8:48 left in the first half.

The Seawolves rallied to tie it at 18-18 before a pair of Harrison free throws ignited a 15-5 Manhattan run to end the half.  Pacheco's jumper as time expired gave the Lady Jaspers a 33-23 lead at the break.  Manhattan shot 50 percent (12-of-24) in the first half, while Stony Brook shot just 26.5 percent (9-of-34).

A Pacheco jumper to open the second half increased Manhattan's lead to 12 points, but Stony Brook responded with an 8-0 run to pull within four, 35-31, with 16:33 remaining.  Regan hit a layup on the other end to start a 7-0 Manhattan run that brought the Lady Jaspers' lead back to 11 points, 42-31.  Manhattan's lead reached a game-high 14 points when Lindsey Loutsenhizer's (North Huntingdon, Pa.) layup made it 53-39 with 8:58 left to play.

Stony Brook again battled back, going on a 12-2 run over the next 4:47 to cut Manhattan's lead to four, 55-51.  Pacheco responded with a layup, then completed a traditional three-point play to bring the lead back to nine with 3:16 remaining.  With the Seawolves forced to foul to stop the clock, the Lady Jaspers scored their last seven points at the free throw line to cap the 70-60 victory.

Pacheco, who recorded a career-high in the scoring column for the second straight game, led four Lady Jaspers in double figures.  She also distributed a team-best four assists.  In addition to her 11 points and 10 rebounds, Regan tied a career-best with three blocks in a career-high 39 minutes played.  Loutsenhizer finished one rebound shy of a double-double, notching 13 points and nine rebounds, while Harrison tallied 10 points and equaled her career-high with three steals.  The Lady Jaspers shot 47.2 percent (25-of-53) from the field and outrebounded the Seawolves 40-38.  Manhattan shot 31.3 percent (5-of-16) from three-point land and 57.7 percent (15-of-26) at the free throw line.

Brown notched a career-high 17 points to pace the Seawolves.  Destiny Jacobs tallied 10 points and nine rebounds for Stony Brook, while Kairsten Nunn finished with nine points, six rebounds, three assists and three steals.  Stony Brook shot 36.8 percent (25-of-68) from the field and 76.9 percent (10-of-13) at the charity stripe.  The Seawolves didn't make a three-pointer in three attempts from behind the arc.

Up next, Manhattan makes the long cross-country trip for its first-ever meeting with Portland (4-6).  The Lady Jaspers and Pilots are set to square off at 10 p.m. ET on Friday night.
