RIVERDALE, N.Y. ? The Manhattan College women's soccer team battled Siena (12-1-3, 5-1-1 MAAC) to a scoreless double-overtime tie this morning on Senior Day at Gaelic Park. Prior to the contest the Lady Jaspers honored graduating seniors Brittany Duhamel, Viviane Masters and Christine Reina for their hard work and dedication to the women's soccer program over the past four years.
“I thought we played well enough to win today,” stated head coach Sean Driscoll. “We had chances, but didn't capitalize on them. Siena is a good team, one of the best in the conference.”
Manhattan (6-7-3, 3-2-2 MAAC) outshot the Saints 18-8, and placed seven shots on goal.
The Lady Jaspers' offensive unit induced pressure on Siena from the start. In the 27th minute midfielder Kara Bucci sent a lead pass to Caroline Morse who picked it up on the run. Morse found a seam in the defense and lofted a shot over the charging Siena goalkeeper Laura Ettinger, which sailed just wide of right post.
Reina also slightly missed goal scoring opportunities down the stretch. Her header in the 77th from five yards out was saved by Ettinger. Then in the first overtime session Reina charged up the right side past the Saints' defense, settled a feed from Courtney McMahon, and fired an open look just above the crossbar.
Lady Jaspers' goalkeeper Alyssa Bachowski went all 110 minutes between the pipes and gathered six saves. Ettinger posted seven for the Saints.
“I was happy with our enthusiasm and defensive effort today,” explained Driscoll. “Although, I can not say I am ever satisfied with a tie.”
The Lady Jaspers hit the road next weekend for their final two matches of the regular-season. Manhattan faces off at Iona Friday afternoon, and then travels to Fairfield for a Sunday matinee.
