New Rochelle, N.Y. (April 29, 2007)?The Lady Jaspers won their second MAAC game in as many days, routing Iona 16-8 and scoring 13 runs in the second inning in the nightcap of today's doubleheader. 17 batters came to the plate in the inning, as Manhattan pounded out 10 hits for 13 runs. The Lady Jaspers had 11 straight batters reach base, while Michelle Gutierrez and Amanda Genovese hit homeruns.
In the first inning, a two-run homerun by Candice Sheridan, her seventh of the season, was a sign of things to come. Iona scored twice in their half of the inning, tying the score at two heading into the second.
The huge inning started innocently enough with a groundout, but a single by Genovese, who went 2-4 with two RBI, got the ball rolling. After Lyndzie Phillips and Liz Strein reached base, Stephanie Gozdziewski drove Genovese and Phillips in with a double. Kerry Cook then singled through the right side, driving in Strein and Gozdziewski to make the score 6-2.
After two more runners reached base, Gutierrez provided the big blow, a grand slam to centerfield that made the score 10-2. Devon Gustafson was the ninth straight Lady Jasper to reach base with a walk, then was brought home when Genovese homered for the second straight day, making the score 12-2. A two-run double by Cook and an RBI by Just were the final three runs of the inning.
All told, Genovese, Phillips, Cook, and Just had two hits in the inning, while Just had an RBI, Genovese and Gozdziewski each had two RBI, and Gutierrez and Cook each had four RBI.
In the 4th inning, Manhattan scored its 16th run of the game when Just picked up her fourth hit of the day and second RBI of the game with a single that scored Strein
In game one, Iona jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the first inning, and held on as starting pitcher Becky Riccitelli held Manhattan to no runs and two hits over the first six innings. In the seventh, Cook began her terrific day at the plate with a two-run homerun.
For the two games, Cook went 5-8 with 6 RBI.
The Lady Jaspers return to action this Thursday when they take on Wagner again in Staten Island. Game one is scheduled to begin at 3:00 p.m.
