UNIVERSITY AT ALBANY TAKES TWO FROM SOFTBALL IN NON-CONFERENCE ACTION

Albany, N.Y. (April 18, 2007)?Returning to the field for the first time since Saturday due to inclement weather in the area, Manhattan was swept by Albany in a doubleheader this afternoon, 8-0 and 9-3. Candice Sheridan hit two more homeruns for the Lady Jaspers in game two, both solo shots, giving her six on the season.

In game one, Albany jumped on Manhattan for four runs in the first inning and didn't look back the rest of the way. Kelly Ogden, who went 2-3 with 4 RBI in game one, doubled in two runs off Manhattan starter Kristin Gelsleichter to give Albany a 2-0 lead. One batter later, Meagan Butsch hit a two-run homerun give the home side a 4-0 lead after one inning.

In the fourth inning with Albany leading 6-0, another two-run double by Ogden put the Great Danes up 8-0. After pitcher Casey Halloran retired the Lady Jaspers in order in the top of the 5th inning, the game was called due to the eight-run rule.

In game two, a grand slam in the third inning by Butsch was the big blow that sent Albany on their way to a 9-3 win.

Manhattan trailed 1-0 in the top of the second inning, but evened the score on a Devon Gustafson RBI single. Stephanie Gozdziewski and Sheridan led off the inning with back-to-back walks, then Gozdziewski scored on Gustafson's second RBI of the season.

With the score tied 1-1 in the third, Nicole Kothe hit an RBI double that broke the tie and gave Albany a 2-1 lead. Three batters later, Butsch hit her grand slam, giving her six RBI on the day.

Sheridan led off Manhattan's half of the fourth inning with her fifth dinger of the season, then homered again with one out in the sixth inning.

The Lady Jaspers return to the field Friday in Buffalo, N.Y. to make up a doubleheader with Canisius that was cancelled last Sunday due to poor weather.
