Bronx, N.Y. (April 10, 2007)?The Lady Jaspers made life difficult for Fordham this afternoon in a doubleheader between the two local rivals, but Fordham was able to come away with victories in both games. Fordham scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to pull away for a 6-3 win in game one, while Fordham starters Sara Kinney and Nicole Ayres limited Manhattan to just one run in a 3-1 victory in the nightcap.
Manhattan jumped out to a 1-0 lead in game one when Kerry Cook singled in Amanda Genovese from third, then went up 2-0 in the third inning when Candice Sheridan blasted her fourth homerun of the season.
Lady Jaspers starter Liz Pennino made the lead stand up early on, allowing just one run, and limiting Fordham to four hits through the first five frames.
Leading 2-1 in the top of the fifth inning, Manhattan missed a chance to increase its lead when Jaclyn Churilla was thrown out at home after trying to score from third on Genovese's bunt. After Pennino got out of the fifth inning, Fordham rallied to take the lead, then broke the game open with a five run sixth inning. A two-run double by Megan Hansen tied the score at three, then after an RBI single by Allison Twarowski gave Fordham a 4-3 lead, Melissa Andrews tripled in two runs to give the Rams a 6-3 lead.
Twarowski retired the side in the seventh to give Fordham the win.
In game two, the home side jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning after RBI singles from Andrews and Megan Waldron. The Lady Jaspers got a run back in the top of the third when senior Stephanie Gozdziewski walked with the bases loaded, scoring Lyndzie Phillips. That would be the only run Manhattan would get despite collecting 11 hits off Kinney and Ares.
Manhattan starter Kristin Gelsleichter was the hard luck loser as she limited Fordham to just four hits and one run after the first inning.
The Green & White return to the field tomorrow when they travel to Hempstead, N.Y. to take on Hofstra University. First pitch is scheduled for 4:00 p.m.
