WOMEN'S LACROSSE REBOUNDS WITH STRONG DEFENSIVE EFFORT IN 12-7 MAAC WIN AT FAIRFIELD
Fairfield, N.Y. (April 1, 2007)- After a loss in its last MAAC game, Manhattan came out with a refocused attitude in its MAAC game against Fairfield University, keeping the Stags off the scoreboard in the first half, and leading by as many as eight on the way to a 12-7 win. Manhattan improves to 2-6 overall, but the Lady Jaspers 1-1 in MAAC play.
Goalkeeper Ashley Devins and the Manhattan defense were stifling in the first half, keeping Fairfield out of the net the entire 30 minutes. Devins made six of her nine saves and the Lady Jasper defense caused 13 turnovers in the opening stanza. The first half shutout was the first for Manhattan since May 1, 2005, when the Lady Jaspers kept Siena off the scoreboard in the MAAC Championship Game on their way to the win.
The Manhattan offense found the back of the net five times in the first half. After 15 scoreless minutes, the Lady Jaspers scored five times over the next 11 minutes. Lauren Civardi scored the first two goals, followed by a goal by Alicia Psillos. Jenny Carman assisted on Psillos' tally, and then recorded a marker of her own, as Manhattan took a 4-0 lead into the locker room.
Carman registered another tally 1:13 into the second half, before Fairfield cracked the scoreboard at the 28:29. Brenna Tinari and Psillos (assisted by Jillian McGowan) each scored a goal for the Lady Jaspers to make the score 7-1 before the Stags ran off three straight goal to pull within four, 7-4, with 16:36 to play in the game.
After Kaitlin McGorry scored on a free position shot with 15:11 remaining, Psillos put the game away with a personal 4-0 run, scoring three goals and assisting on a fourth over the next five minutes to give the Lady Jaspers' their largest lead of the game, 12-4, with 9:51 to play. Keri Morrison assisted on one of Psillos' goals in the run, while the other two were unassisted. Tinari scored the fourth goal.
Fairfield scored three times over the final 5:12 to provide the final margin.
Psillos ended her day with a five goals and one assist, while Morrison, Julie Wilson, and Ashley Devins each picked up a team-high four groundballs. Katelyn Williams led the team with three caused turnovers.
Manhattan gets back in action on Thursday, April 5, hosting Iona College at Eastchester High School. The game is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
