Hamden, Conn. (March 4, 2007)- Manhattan posted a dramatic comeback to pull within a goal with just over a minute remaining, but the Lady Jaspers could not score the equalizer, dropping a 10-9 decision at Quinnipiac University this afternoon. Senior Lauren Civardi paced the Manhattan offense with two goals and two assists.
Manhattan scored the game's first goal at the 19:30 mark, as Kaitlin McGorry took a pass from Jenny Carman and put the ball past the goalie to give the Lady Jaspers a 1-0 lead. The two teams traded goals the rest of the opening stanza, as the teams went into the locker room knotted at 3-3. The second was scored by Caralyn Hickey, her first collegiate goal, off a pass from Brenna Tinari, while the second came from Carman.
Quinnipiac opened the second half with a 5-1 flurry over the first 10 minutes, with the Manhattan goal provided by McGorry and the assist going to Jillian McGowan, to open up an 8-4 lead with 21:14 remaining. Each team score twice while 10 minutes ticked off the clock, with Civardi scoring the first and recording the assist as McGowan scored the second goal, and trailed, 10-6, before Civardi sparked the Manhattan comeback attempt by feeding Emilia Ward with 7:25 remaining to get the Lady Jaspers within three, 10-7. Tinari scored off a pass from McGowan with 4:15 left to make the score 10-8, before Civardi beat the Quinnipiac keeper with 1:11 remaining to cut the deficit to one, 10-9. McGowan forced a turnover to give the Lady Jaspers an opportunity for the equalizer, but Manhattan could not draw even.
Ashley Devins made 10 saves in net for Manhattan, which gets back in action on Tuesday, March 7, traveling to Staten Island, N.Y. to take on Wagner, with game time slated for 3:00 p.m.
