Philadelphia, Pa. ? Manhattan traveled to Philadelphia, Pa and beat Ivy League opponent University of Pennsylvania in a non-conference game. It was a team effort from the Lady Jaspers as senior Caitlin Flood led all scorers with 20 points, Gabrielle Cottrell contributed 17 and Joann Nwafili dropped 14 in their victory.
In the first half, the Lady J's jumped out to a 4-0 on 4-4 free throw shooting from senior Caitlin Flood. For the first five minutes, Manhattan tallied three steal and caused four Quaker turnovers. Manhattan was in the lead for the majority of the first half and would make sure to hold on to that lead despite going 11-28 from the field. But the Lady J's had momentum as Flood knocked down a jump-shot with one second remaining in the first half to put them up 31-25 at the break.
The second proved to be Manhattan's time as the Lady Jaspers outscored Penn. 35-19 in the second half. Manhattan only turned the ball over four times in the second half, as they took care of the ball tonight, only committing 11 turnovers for the entire game. Their defense held Penn.'s high scorer Carrie Biemer to only 11 points on the night, including only two points in the second half.
Their defense was anchored by a team effort of 14 steals and only allowing nine points off of field goals in the second half. Manhattan finished the game going 6-14 from behind the arc and 14-22 from the charity stripe.
With three players scoring over 10 points each, the Lady Jaspers offense was in full gear. Flood just missed a double-double pulling down a game high nine rebounds. Cottrell tallied five steals as their defense shut down the Quakers in their victory.
Manhattan will be back in action on Tuesday, November 20 as they will continue on the road taking on Providence College. The game is set to start at 7:00 p.m.
