Riverdale, N.Y. ? The Manhattan volleyball team was downed by MAAC opponent Marist College, 3-1. Junior Alyssa Getzel paced the Manhattan offense with 38 assists.
Manhattan traveled to Poughkeepsie, N.Y. looking to improve their conference record against Marist. In the first game, the Lady Jaspers ran out to an early 7-5 lead. From this point on, both teams battled back and forth in a game that saw 10 score ties. With the game tied at 19, the Lady J's scored the next five consecutive points to go up, 24-19. The Lady Jaspers never looked back as they took the first game, 30-28. In the second game, Manhattan again built up an early lead, 11-9. But the Red Foxes battled back and the Lady Jaspers were in a nine point deficit, 27-18. Behind sophomore Rita Welsh's four kills, the Lady J's bounced back and cut the deficit to three points, 27-24. The lead was too far to catch, as Marist went on to win the second game, 30-25 and even the match up at one game apiece.
With the match tied, Marist came out at the gun in the third game and took a commanding 21-7 lead. The Red Foxes held onto the lead and went on to win the third game, 30-20. In the fourth game, Manhattan knew it had to do something in order to avoid another conference loss. Manhattan once again was in an early hole, down 7-1. But the Lady Jaspers were not going to go quietly as they cut the deficit to two as they were down, 16-14. That would be the closest Manhattan could come, as Marist went on to win the third game, 30-20 and the match, 3-1.
Junior Sherryta Stokes and Welsh each had a team high 10 kills for the Manhattan offense. Senior Ashley Watson had a game high 16 digs and Welsh contributed nine total blocks to anchor the Lady Jasper defense.
Manhattan will be in action tomorrow, October 28, as they continue to travel to Siena College. The match will start at 2:00 p.m
