Riverdale, N.Y. (January 8, 2007)?Sarah Wilson scored 18 points, and was one of four Purple Eagles to score in double figures as Niagara University defeated Manhattan 70-51 Monday night. The Purple Eagles shot 49 percent from the field for the game, and in doing so improve to 9-6 on the season and 1-3 in the MAAC. The Lady Jaspers fall to 4-10 and 1-3 in the MAAC.
Niagara shot the lights out of Draddy Gym in the first half, shooting a scorching 53 percent from the field. The hot shooting helped the Purple Eagles to a big 34-18 halftime advantage that proved to be too much for the Lady Jaspers to overcome.
Despite the big halftime deficit, Manhattan kept fighting and played Niagara nearly even in the second half, just being out-scored by a 36-33 margin. While Niagara maintained their sizeable advantage throughout much of the half, the Lady Jaspers made one last attempt at comeback with just over four minutes remaining. Gabrielle Cottrell knocked three-pointers on consecutive Manhattan possessions to cut the Niagara lead to 62-49, but that would be as close as the Green & White would get the rest of the way.
For the second consecutive game, junior forward Caitlin Flood set a season high in points, scoring 21 on 5-11 shooting, to go along with a career high 14 rebounds. Just two days earlier, Flood set her previous season high by scoring 20 against Iona. Freshman forward Jess Victor reached a season high in points with 10 on 4-7 shooting.
Manhattan returns to action this Friday when the Lady Jaspers conclude their three game home stand against Loyola College. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
