West Point, N.Y. (September 26, 2006)- Army scored three goals in the second half to break open a close game, defeating Manhattan, 4-0, in the Jaspers' final non-conference match before opening MAAC play on a clear, brisk fall evening at West Point's Clinton Field Tuesday.
Garrett Dresel put the hosts on top in the 19th minute when he trapped a cross from Bill Watts, turned and blasted a shot past Manhattan goalkeeper
John Ciano from 10 yards away.
Four minutes into the second half, Watts was taken down by Ciano in the penalty box. Doug Jones converted the ensuing penalty kick to give Army a 2-0 lead.
Manhattan came out in the second half with increased intensity, looking to turn the match around in the second 45 minutes. However,
Adam Kiley's header hit the post six minutes after Jones' penalty kick, and then Jones saved a ball off the goal line in the 64th minute when he stopped an
Adolfo Rivera shot that beat Army goalie A.J. Glubzinski, who had come about eight yards off his line to play a cross during a scramble in the front of the net.
The Jaspers looked as though they would finally get on the scoreboard in the 81st minute when
John Dellipriscoli chipped a shot over Glubzinski in a one-on-one situation from about 16 yards away. As the ball bounced toward the vacated net, Army's Daniel Newell was able to track down the ball and send it out of bounds inches before crossing the goal line.
The Black Knights scored to late goals to put the game out of reach.
Glubzinski evened his record on the season at 2-2, tallying his second shutout victory. Ciano made three saves for the Jaspers.
Manhattan opens MAAC play this weekend, hosting Canisius on Friday at 3:30 before welcoming Niagara to Gaelic Park on Sunday at 10:00 a.m.
