Riverdale, N.Y. (December 2, 2006)?Quinnipiac's Courtney Kaminski hit two foul shots with 18 seconds left in the second half to give the Bobcats a five point lead, and the winning margin of 59-54. Manhattan trailed 57-51 with just over a minute and a half left, but a traditional three-point play by Caitlin Flood got the Lady J's to within three. However, Manhattan could not get any closer, and were handed their second straight loss, dropping to 3-4 on the season.
After Flood's three-point play, Manhattan came up with a key defensive stop, denying Quinnipiac's Erin Kerner a lay-up. On the Lady Jaspers' next possession, Amanda LoCascio's three point attempt with 52 seconds left from the right side rattled in and out, forcing Manhattan to foul Kaminski on the next possession.
Manhattan led for all of 18 seconds on this afternoon, grabbing a one point, 19-18 lead at 6:46 in the first half on a pair of Kelly Regan foul shots. The Bobcats scored the game's first nine points, and led by as much as 14-2. However, the Lady Jaspers chipped away at the lead, going on a 17-4 run over five minutes to take the lead. After a field goal by Flood, four straight foul shots by Joann Nwafili and Jenna Franciosa got Manhattan to within six at 16-10. Gabrielle Cottrell scored the game's next five points, a jumper from 10 feet and a three-pointer from the corner that trimmed Quinnipiac's lead to one.
Quinnipiac led 29-26 at intermission, and gradually pulled away in the second stanza. The Bobcats led by nine at 39-30, but an Annie McIntyre trifecta got the Lady J's to within six. Quinnipiac though kept Manhattan at a safe distance throughout much of the half, never letting Manhattan cut too deeply into their lead. Manhattan's last attempt at a comeback came when trailing 52-43, Manhattan scored eight of the game's next 13 points to cut the lead to 57-51, leading up to Flood's three-point play.
Neither team shot the ball particualry well, with Quinnipiac shooting 31.7 percent and the Lady J's 32.7 percent. Kelly Regan led all Manhattan scorers with 15 points, while Flood had a double-double with 14 points and a career-tying high 12 rebounds. It is the fourth straight game the junior has scored in double figures, and her second double-double of the season.
Manhattan returns to action next Friday, when they open up MAAC play against rivals Siena College in Loudonville, N.Y. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
