Riverdale, N.Y. (December 10, 2006)- Loyola College used a late, 13-0, run to pull away from Manhattan College this afternoon in a MAAC Conference matchup at Draddy Gym on the Manhattan campus. With the 77-58 win, the Greyhounds improve their record to 5-3, 1-1 in MAAC play, while the Jaspers fall to 3-6, 1-1 in MAAC play.
After Darryl Crawford hit a jumper to score the game's first points, Loyola used an 8-0 run to take a six point lead, 8-2, with 15:23 left in the first half. The Greyhounds maintained the lead for the rest of the first half, but were unable to increase the lead to larger than six points until a 7-0 Loyola run put the Greyhounds up nine, 32-23, with 1:17 left before the break. The Jaspers scored the final four points of the half to go into the locker room trailing by just five, 32-27.
A Guy Ngarndi layup at the 19:21 cut the lead to three, 32-29, but consecutive three pointers from Marquis Sullivan and Gerald Brown pushed the lead back to nine, 39-28, with 18:18 left to play. The Greyhounds began to gradually increase the lead, taking a 17 point lead, 59-42, following two Brown free throws, before the Jaspers fashioned a 12-2 run, capped by two Ngarndi free throws, to pull within seven, 61-54, with 6:10 to play. Loyola's Josko Alujevic answered with a three pointer from the top of the key on the ensuing possession to push the lead back to double-digits, and Manhattan would draw no closer the rest of the way.
Crawford led all scorers with a game-high 18 points, adding six rebounds for Manhattan. Devon Austin chipped in with 11 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Brown paced Loyola with 16 points and eight rebounds.
The Jaspers went 0-9 from beyond the arc, ending a stretch of 326 consecutive games with a three-pointer, dating back to December 29, 1994.
Manhattan will break for exams before returning to action on Thursday, December 21, traveling to Brooklyn, N.Y. to take on St. Francis-N.Y. College. Game time is slated for 7:00 p.m.
