Orlando, Fla. - Canisius College bumped off Manhattan Volleyball to claim third place in the 2006 MAAC Tournament on Saturday at Disney's Wide World of Sports complex. Manhattan sophomore Sherryta Stokes posted a double-double in what proved to be the season finale for both programs.
Stokes, who was recently awarded with All-MAAC Second Team honors, notched 12 kills to go with eight digs, but her performance was overshadowed by Canisius' Mary Boller and Aislinn Hayes. Boller connected on a match-high 19 kills and Hayes added 16 kills, while the pair combined for a .356 hitting percentage.
Manhattan middles Rita Welsh and Whitney Judkins also reached double figures in kills with 13 and 11, respectively, but the Lady Jaspers hit only .130 as a team compared to Canisius' .224 hitting percentage.
Judkins, who finished first on the team in hitting percentage for the 2006 campaign, also added six digs and two blocks in her final match in a Lady Jasper uniform. Fellow senior co-captain Meghan Plunkett recorded nine kills and seven digs to close out her collegiate career. Although they will leave the MAAC Tournament with only a fourth place finish, the two were fortunate enough to experience a MAAC Championship during their tenure at Manhattan as they were contributors on the 2003 squad which reached the NCAA Tournament for the second time in school history.
Junior Ashley Watson finished the game with 27 digs to put her season total at 584, which shatters the previous Manhattan single season record of 472.
The Lady Jaspers finish the season at 13-21 overall.
