COLUMBIA SNAPS WOMEN'S SOCCER'S UNBEATEN STREAK, 2-1

New York, N.Y. (September 14, 2005)- In a game that saw a 50 minute delay due to lightning in the area, Columbia's Meghan Hurlbut scored the game's first goal and added the assist on the game-winner, as the Lions defeated Manhattan, 2-1, tonight at Columbia Soccer Stadium. The loss snaps the Lady Jaspers' four game unbeaten streak, the program's longest since the 1999 season. Manhattan falls to 3-3-1, while Columbia improves to 2-2-1.

The 1999 Lady Jaspers posted a five game unbeaten streak, going 5-0-0 over that stretch. Despite the unbeaten streak ending, Manhattan and first-year head coach Sean Driscoll have matched the program's best start since the 1998 season.

After a scoreless first half, the Lions broke into the scoring column at the 58:28 mark, as Hurlbut curled in a free kick from 15 yards out to make the score 1-0.

The Lady Jaspers showed the resilience that has led them to their best start in over four years, knotting the score at 1-1 just over eight minutes later, as Katie Kuntz headed home a Suzanne Graham cross off a corner kick.

Columbia regained the lead at the 71:58 mark, as Jenny Brandt put the ball to the back of the net, with Hurlbut being credited with the assist.

DeFino made six saves for Manhattan, while Allison Vespa tallied two saves for the Lions.

Kuntz, Mikeala Coni, and Chrissy Reina each tallied one shot on goal for Manhattan, who plays its home opener this Saturday, September 17, hosting Drexel at Gaelic Park. Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m.
