SOFTBALL SPLITS DOUBLE HEADER AT NIAGARA

GAME 2 BOXSCORE

Niagara University, NY (May 1, 2005)- Manhattan split a MAAC double header this afternoon at Niagara Field, winning game one, 13-6, before dropping an 11-6 decision in the nightcap. The Lady Jaspers are now 20-18 overall, 7-3 in MAAC play.

In the opener, after two scoreless innings, Manhattan exploded for eight runs in the top of the third. Stefanie Gozdziewski, Michelle Gutierrez, Tina Buyea, Kerry Cook, and Jen McCracken each tallied RBI singles, while Liz Strein recorded an RBI walk, and Deirdre Langan belted a two RBI single to make the score 8-0 in favor of Manhattan.

Kiera Fox led off the top of the fourth with a solo homer, her 13th of the season, to extend the lead to 9-0, before the Purple Eagles pushed across two runs in the bottom of the frame to climb to within 9-2.

The Lady Jaspers would look to put the game away in the top of the fifth. Langan would plate two runs with a double, before scoring herself on a passed ball. Fox would later score on a Michelle Gutierrez single, giving Manhattan an 11-2 lead.

Niagara would stave off the eight run rule with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth, but neither team would score the rest of the way, as Manhattan earned an 11-6 win.

In the nightcap, the Lady Jaspers would race out to an early 2-0 lead behind RBI singles from Langan and Fox in the top of the first, but the Purple Eagles would knot the score with a two run bottom of the first.

Niagara would break things open with a five run third and a two run fourth to take a 9-2 lead, before the Lady Jaspers began to mount a comeback.

McCracken would bring home Gozdziewski with an RBI triple in the top of the fifth, and a bases loaded walk to Erika Kostik would score Marina Ysaac to make the score 9-4.

Niagara would respond with two runs of its own in the bottom of the frame to regain its seven run lead, before Manhattan put together a rally for the second straight inning.

In the top of the sixth, Gozdziewski doubled from Strein, who had led off the inning with a walk, before McCracken plated her with a single. However the Lady Jaspers would not be able to sustain the rally, falling 11-6.

Fox would go 3-4 on the day with four walks, a homer, and two RBI, while McCracken went 4-8 with two RBI, and Langan went 3-8 with five RBI to pace the Lady Jasper attack.

Manhattan will return to action tomorrow, May 2, when the Lady Jaspers take on MAAC foe Canisius in a double header beginning at 1:00 p.m.
