GAME 2 BOXSCORE
Riverdale, NY (April 26, 2005)- Manhattan won its sixth straight MAAC game, and took home its seventh win in its last eight games with a MAAC double header sweep of Saint Peter's this afternoon at Gaelic Park. The Lady Jaspers posted a 5-4 win in the opener and a 4-2 win in the nightcap to move into a tie for third place in the MAAC standings. Manhattan is now 19-17 overall and 6-2 in MAAC play while Saint Peter's falls to 11-28 overall and 0-8 in MAAC play.
A Deirdre Langan RBI single plated Stefanie Gozdziewski in the bottom of the first to give Manhattan an early 1-0 lead in the opener. The Peahens evened the score at 1-1 in the top of the second on a sacrifice bunt.
The score remained 1-1 into the top of the fifth, when Saint Peter's took a 2-1 lead on an RBI single. The lead held up until the bottom of the sixth, when Manhattan's bats started to heat up. Jen McCracken led off the inning with a single before Langan sacrificed her to second. Kiera Fox followed with her team-leading 28th RBI of the season, singling home McCracken and taking third when the throw to the plate got away from the Peahen catcher. Michelle Gutierrez singled home Fox with a single before coming around to score on a two-run homer by Tina Buyea to make the score 5-2 in favor of Manhattan.
Saint Peter's would not go quietly, fashioning a two out rally that scored two runs, and had runners on first and second when Lady Jasper starter Jill Medea induced a game-ending popup. Medea struck out three for the win.
In the nightcap, Liz Strein led off the bottom of the first with a homer to give Manhattan a 1-0 lead. The Lady Jaspers would double their lead in the third when McCracken singled home Strein.
Once again, the Peahens would rally, tying the score at 2-2 on a two-run homer in the top of the fifth, but Manhattan would not be denied as McCracken tallied her fifth homer of the season in the bottom of the frame, chasing home Gozdziewski to provide the final margin.
Saint Peter's threatened in the top of the sixth, putting runners on second and third with two outs, but Gozdziewski ran down a deep fly ball to center to end the inning. Medea added two more strikeouts in improving her record to 14-9.
Manhattan gets back in action Wednesday, April 27, when the Lady Jaspers travel to New Britain, CT for a non-conference double header at Central Connecticut State, with the first game slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
