GAME 2 BOXSCORE
Riverdale, NY (April 25, 2005)- Manhattan used the long ball in game one to shutout Rider, 10-0, in game one, and took advantage of four Rider errors in the nightcap to take game two, 8-0, with both games being shortened to five innings due to the eight-run rule. Lady Jasper starter Jill Medea scattered a combined five hits to earn both wins. With the wins, Manhattan eclipses its win total from last season, and has already won its most games since the 2001 season with seven series still to play. The Lady Jaspers improve to 17-17, 4-2 in MAAC play, while Rider falls to 10-28, 3-9 in MAAC play.
In the first game, Kiera Fox led off the second inning with a double, and, after an out, came around to score on a double by Tina Buyea. After a wild pitch moved Buyea to third, Erika Kostik brought her home with a sacrifice fly. Jen McCracken increased the lead to 3-0 with a solo homer in the third, her fifth of the season, before Fox pushed the lead to 4-0 with a solo homer in the fourth.
Manhattan closed out the game in the fifth, plating six runs. Stefanie Gozdziweski came home on a wild pitch to score the first run of the inning, before Fox connected on her second homer of the game and her team-leading 12th of the season, a two run blast to make the score 7-0. After a walk and a single, Kostik belted her first homer of the season, a three-run blast that invoked the eight run rule. A Manhattan record eight different Jaspers have now homered this season as the Lady Jaspers have sent a Manhattan record 23 balls over the fence this year.
Medea allowed just two hits while striking out six for the win.
In the nightcap, the Lady Jaspers cracked the scoreboard for two runs in the third, the first on a McCracken RBI single, and the second when Gozdziewski scampered home on a passed ball.
With Medea again keeping the Broncs batters off balance, the Lady Jaspers put the game away in the fifth, plating six runs. Liz Strein led off the inning and reached on an error. Gozdziewski attempted to sacrifice her over, but the throw from third went down the right field line, allowing both runners to score. With the bases loaded three batters later, Michelle Gutierrez drove home two with a single through the left side. A passed ball brought home the seventh run, and Strein ended the game with a single to right, again invoking the eight run rule.
Medea scattered three hits while striking out three to improve her record to 12-9 on the season.
Manhattan gets back in action Tuesday, April 26, when the Lady Jaspers host Saint Peter's for a MAAC twin bill slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
