GAME 2 BOXSCORE
New Rochelle, NY (April 16, 2005)- Manhattan dropped two games at Iona today in the Lady Jaspers' MAAC opener. Kiera Fox connected on her eighth homer of the season in the first game, moving her into a tie for first on the Manhattan single season homer list with Danielle Yearick's 1993 total. The Gaels downed Manhattan by scores of 5-1 and 2-1.
In the first game, home runs accounted for all the game's runs as Iona hit a two-run shot in the bottom of the first before Fox connected on her third round tripper in her last six games to bring Manhattan to within one, 2-1. The Gaels would add a solo homer and a two-run homer in the sixth to provide the final margin.
Becky Riccitelli earned the win for Iona, allowing just Fox's homer and a Liz Strein single, striking out 12 while walking just one. Jill Medea struck out five in the loss.
The long ball was a factor in the nightcap as well, as Iona's Alison Higgs led off the bottom of the first with a solo homer.
Manhattan knotted the score in the fourth when Michelle Gutierrez singled home Jennifer McCracken.
The Gaels pushed across the winning run in the bottom of the fifth on a Liz Hammel sacrifice fly.
Medea struck out five more in the loss, while Higgs allowed just two hits with seven strikeouts.
Manhattan plays again Sunday, April 17, when the Lady Jaspers travel to Fairfield, CT for a MAAC doubleheader at Fairfield. The first pitch is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
