Washington, DC (March 6, 2005)- In the championship game of the GW Colonial Classic, Army scored eight runs over the first three innings, and held off a seventh inning Manhattan rally to post a 9-5 win over the Lady Jaspers.
After Manhattan scored a run in the top of the first when
Stefanie Gozdziewski scored on a wild pitch, Army answered with one run in the first, three in the second and four in the third to open up an 8-2 lead. The Lady Jaspers' second run came in the top of the third, when
Liz Strein singled home Gozdziewski.
Army added a run in the fifth to make the score 9-2 before the Lady Jaspers began to rally in the seventh. With two outs and runners on second and third, Strein ripped a two-run triple, scoring
Margaret LaFex and
Marina Ysaac.
Jennifer McCracken followed with a single to score Strein, but the comeback attempt ended one batter later, making the final score 9-5 Army.
Gozdziewski went 2-2 with two runs on the day, and Strein posted a 2-3 day with three RBI and a run.
Liz Pennino went the first 3.0 innings in the loss, and
Kristin Gelsleichter went the final three innings, allowing no hits.
