GAME 2 BOXSCORE
Philadelphia, PA (March 31, 2005)- Sophomore Deirdre Langan went a combined 4-6 with a homer and three RBI to help lead Manhattan to a doubleheader sweep at LaSalle this afternoon at Good Shepherd Field. The Lady Jaspers even their record at 8-8, their best start to a season since 2001.
In the opener, the Explorers took an early lead, as a solo homer in the bottom of the first gave LaSalle a 1-0 lead. However, Manhattan starter Jill Medea would not allow a run the rest of the way.
The Lady Jasper bats began to heat up in the top of the fifth, as Manhattan took advantage of three LaSalle errors to even the score at 1-1 on an RBI single by Liz Strein.
Manhattan took the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth, as Erika Kostik drove home Kiera Fox and Margaret LaFex with a two-RBI single.
Medea went the distance, scattering six hits while striking out 10.
In the second game, the Lady Jaspers picked up right where they left off, as Langan connected on a three-run homer, the first of her collegiate career, in the top of the first to give Manhattan the early, 3-0, lead. The home run trend continued in the second as Stefanie Gozdziewski also delivered her first collegiate homer, sending the ball over the wall for a two-run round tripper to run the score to 5-0 Manhattan.
Gozdziewski scored on a passed ball in the top of the fourth to make the score 6-0 before LaSalle got on the board in the bottom of the frame to provide the final margin.
Liz Pennino went the first four innings, allowing one run on two hits while fanning two for her first win of the season. Medea struck out the side in the fifth before the game was called due to darkness.
For Manhattan, Jennifer McCracken went 2-5 on the day, Gozdziewski went 3-6 with a homer and two RBI, and Strein went 3-7 with an RBI.
Manhattan opens up MAAC play this Saturday, when the Lady Jaspers host Saint Peter's in Manhattan's homer opener. The doubleheader is slated to begin at 1:00 p.m.
