MEN'S SOCCER BLANKS FORDHAM IN SEASON OPENER, 1-0

Riverdale, NY (September 1, 2004)- Sophomore Justin Schultz converted a penalty kick with 27 minutes left in the game, and fellow sophomore Collin Leaver stopped all seven shots he faced as Manhattan defeated Bronx rival Fordham, 1-0, in the season opener for both teams today at Gaelic Park.

A hand ball was called in the Fordham penalty area, setting up Schultz for what proved to be the game-winner, as he connected on his first collegiate goal to provide all the scoring in the game.

Fordham had a chance to take the lead a few minutes earlier, but Shaun Moamen's shot from 18 yards out hit the crossbar.

The Rams outshot the Jaspers, 15-2, but Manhattan held a 7-0 edge in corner kicks.

Leaver posted the shutout for his first win of the season, while Stephen Faber allowed the lone goal.

The Jaspers will return to action on Monday, September 6, when they travel to South Orange, NJ to battle the Seton Hall Pirates in a game that is slated to begin at 3:00 p.m.
