West Haven, CT (April 3, 2004) - The Lady Jaspers earned their first conference win against Canisius beating them 18-4. The Lady Jaspers were led by Senior Mary Dudek who tallied four goals and two assists for a total of six points. The win improves Manhattan's overall record to 5-4 and 1-0 in the MAAC Conference, while the Golden Griffin's drop to a 0-5 overall record and 0-1 in the MAAC.
The game started neck and neck. Under two minutes into the game freshman Jenny Carman opened the scoring with an unassisted goal. Golden Griffin's Anne McNall answered back, also scoring an unassisted goal, tying the game 1-1. The Lady Jaspers then pulled away scoring four goals in a row making the score, 5-1. Amanda Marts, from Canisius, broke Manhattan's scoring streak decreasing the Lady Jaspers lead to only three goals.
Before the half ended the Lady J's went on a six goal streak increasing their lead, 11-2. Carman had three goals by the end of the half, while teammates Dudek, Victoria Carman and Molly Pheterson had two each.
With an 11-2 lead Manhattan did not let up in the second half scoring the first goal three minutes into the second half taking a 10 goal lead. Kelly Bunt scored her lone goal to cut the Lady Jaspers lead to only nine. Manhattan then scored five goals in a row making the score 17-3. Kristen McGuinness completed the scoring for Canisius with less than two minutes to play. With six seconds left, Catherine Dunbar scored her lone goal of the game making the final score 18-4.
Freshman Ashley Devins had five saves for Manhattan, while Rasheeda Brenton had 13 saves.
The Lady Jaspers play Niagara tomorrow, Sunday, April 4 at 4 pm in West Haven, CT at West Haven High School.
