Riverdale, NY (September 24, 2003)-The Manhattan College Women's Soccer team lost to Wagner College 3-2 in double overtime today at Gaelic Park. The Seahawk's Jennifer Spadafino won the game at the 100:45 mark in the second overtime by finishing a penalty shot. Manhattan falls to a 0-7-0 record while the Seahawk's record improves to 4-3-1.
Wagner opened up the scoring at the 40:56 mark when Jennifer Spadafino took advantage of a missed clear, heading the ball over Manhattan goalkeeper Jeanne Marie Gilbert (Northport, NY). Twenty minutes later Gilbert made a spectacular save stopping Spadafino's breakaway to keep the score 1-0 at halftime.
With 26 minutes left to play in regulation Wagner's Jacqueline Santariello received a ball from Spadafino and shot it to the upper left corner out of Gilbert's reach. Finally, at the 72:15 mark Manhattan answered back. After some quick passing by Vanessa DiPaolo (Warwick, RI) and Suzanne Graham (Rockville Centre, NY) Lindsay Bernstein (Stormville, NY) got the ball and ripped a shot past the Seahawk goalkeeper Ashley Wilson. DiPaolo tied the score up with 10:54 left to play in regulation by following a Shaun Volpe (Baldwin, NY) shot sending the game into overtime.
Fourty-five seconds into the second overtime the Seahawks were awarded a penalty shot over a Manhattan foul in the penalty box. Spadafino converted the shot into the game-winning goal.
Manhattan will play again on Saturday, September 27 when they play Northeastern in Brookline, MA at 6:00pm.
