New York, NY (October 8, 2003) -Manhattan's one goal lead was not enough as Columbia University scored two goals in the last five minutes to lift them to a 2-1 victory. The Lady Jaspers now fall to a 2-9-0 overall record (2-0-0 in the MAAC) as the Lions improve to a 3-6-1 record (0-2-0 in the Ivy League).
Columbia outshot Manhattan 14-2 in the first half. The Lion's could not get the ball past the Lady Jasper's goalkeeper
Jeanne Marie Gilbert (Northport, NY). Gilbert had five saves in the first forty-five minutes to keep Columbia scoreless.
In the second half, Manhattan's
Chelsea Volpe (Baldwin, NY) delivered a through ball across the box to teammate
Christine Abrams (Rockville Centre, NY) who then placed the ball in the upper right corner giving Manhattan a 1-0 lead. The Lady Jaspers would hold this lead until the 85:56 mark, at which point Columbia's Courtney Nasshorn scored tying the game 1-1. As the clock ticked down to the last minute of the game, Columbia's Shanon Munoz slid and knocked the ball past Gilbert, giving the Lion's a 2-1 lead which they were able to keep until the end.
Gilbert finished the game with 10 saves while Columbia's goalkeeper Janine Lerardi recorded 4. Columbia out-shot Manhattan 27-7.
Manhattan plays again on Saturday, October 11th, when they will travel to Jersey City, NJ to play a conference game against St. Peter's at 1:00pm.
